- Obstacles — proximity to structures (+25%), power lines (+40%), or a crane requirement (+60%).
- Access — tight backyard or slope access adds about 20% because crews can't bring in a bucket truck.
- Region — a state cost index reflecting local labor and disposal rates.

The calculator combines published contractor pricing for four tree size classes with adjustments for species, obstacles, equipment access, and your state's labor costs. It produces a realistic budgeting range, but the only exact price is a written quote from a local pro who has seen the tree.
What is the biggest factor in tree removal cost?
Height, by a wide margin. A tree under 30 feet typically costs $150–$450 to remove, while a tree over 80 feet typically costs $1,100–$2,000. Obstacles are the second biggest factor — a tree leaning over a house or wrapped in power lines can add 25–50% to the price, and crane work adds $500–$1,500.
Does the estimate include stump grinding?
Only if you tick the stump grinding add-on. Removal quotes normally leave the stump in place; grinding it out costs about $100–$450 per stump — roughly $2–$5 per inch of diameter.
Why does my state change the price?
Labor, insurance, and disposal costs vary regionally. The same medium tree that costs around $615 to remove in Mississippi runs closer to $915 in California. The calculator applies a cost index for each state.
